Roscommon County and its surrounding area boast many water related possibilities. Higgins Lake is rated as one of the world's most beautiful lakes with swimming, boating, diving, fishing, and camping, canoeing, golf, cross country skiing and snowmobiling activities. The water clarity is exceptional and brings people from all over the country to enjoy the crystal clear water offering over 21 miles of shoreline. Houghton Lake has long been known for its fishing and boating and is the largest inland lake in the State of Michigan with 30 miles of shoreline. Winter fun at Houghton Lake includes Tip-Up-Town, snowmobiling and ice fishing. The area also offers many resorts, cabins, and hotels surrounding the lakeshore. Lake St. Helen, Lake James & Marl Lake are also located in the county and offer many recreational opportunities. All lakes have ready access to the water at DNR boat sites or State Parks with Higgins Lake offering 2 State Parks, one on the North end and one at the South end of the lake.

The area rivers offer fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing and are accessible at many points. The South Branch of the AuSable River offers Trout Fishing and the main stream of the AuSable River is within a few miles for the trout fishing enthusiast. Canoe trips can be for a few hours or a few days depending on your desire.
